“I’m sick of the race card” — Feministe. Nothing makes for the crazies quite like these kinds of stories.. at least from my perspective:
But the big problem, of course, isn’t that a man is dead because a bunch of white racists decided to go hunting for human beings. The problem is The Race Card….
Yes, a videotape of a bunch of white people beating a black man before running him over with their car and screaming “white power” while they do it is definitely playing the race card. Holding them accountable for their actions is definitely reverse racism.
also, if i have to hear the term “reverse racism” one more time i’m going to lose my shit. Obviously it’s a clear misunderstanding of what racism entails, the same way people think anytime a punch is thrown in a house it must be domestic violence (and the subsequent nonsensical “studies” that show women are “just as violent” as men..smh). REVERSE RACISM DOES NOT EXIST. Prejudice exists. Hate and intolerance exist. But no, i’m pretty sure that even when people dislike me because i’m a white person i’m not being systemically disenfranchised. I can still turn on the TV and see myself represented (my cis white identity, at least). I am not going to be discriminated against when trying to get a job, or a home, or a loan. In fact, i generally understand that some people are put off by white people because of, you know, the last couple thousand years of history. Including recent history. We live in a white supremacist world. Period. All these white people crying about reverse racism really just need to educate themselves and shut the fuck up. Sorry i don’t feel like playing nice about this today. I’m not sorry.

Well….it does exist. There are quite a few recent news stories which are making me worried about it, in fact. But I do understand your frustration about the “race card” thing….I’m getting pretty sick of people dismissing any racism against Obama as “people bringing up the race card”. Like this country doesn’t have a history of racism….

we can agree to disagree
I believe racism goes a lot deeper than not liking someone because of their skin color. To me that is prejudice. I think racism includes the systemic aspects of marginalization of all non white peoples.. which is why, to a certain extent, i think we misuse “racism” when the more appropriate term is white supremacy.
Americans do conveniently like to ignore the history of how this country was built

Okay, yeah, I think we just disagree on the definition of racism. In my case, I was thinking of recent instances in which people were physically attacked for being white. I would think of that as reverse racism. But I can totally see how the institutionalized racism is not there. Prejudice doesn’t seem strong enough to describe it, though. Maybe just hate crime?

i agree, i think hate crime is super fitting
