My news tonight

Posted on March 3, 2011

Potential 2012 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee had some very nasty things to say about Natalie Portman for being pregnant out of wedlock,  and then continued to say more horrid things about the “reality” of most single mothers:

Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care.

UC Berkeley protester’s doing it big. Once again they are putting their lives on the line to be heard.  Seriously, what will it take for their concerns to be taken seriously? Last spring UC Berkeley students were holding a protest which turned into a hunger strike around the same time that the Saint Mary’s “Our Struggle is Tied with Yours” movement was happening (might be worth a google search. might not), and they actually called some of us in to their camp to help them achieve success (since at the time it looked like we were winning).  Even then, when many of their students decided they would only take water, were sleeping outside in freezing conditions and rain, the Regents wouldn’t even talk to them. I never knew how that situation was resolved, but I guess now I know.. it wasn’t. Have hope – they’ll have to take us seriously sooner or later.

And on the topic of being taken seriously, the way our “military justice” (or “criminal” “justice”)  is run needs to be taken very seriously:

“This type of degrading treatment is inexcusable and without justification,” Mr. Coombs wrote. “It is an embarrassment to our military justice system and should not be tolerated. Pfc. Manning has been told that the same thing will happen to him again tonight. No other detainee at the brig is forced to endure this type of isolation and humiliation.

It is my personal opinion that WikiLeaks has done more good than harm.  People say it fueled the revolutions happening around the globe (not started by any means, but enhanced).  It also brings about something our government especially is not used to: accountability.  Governments need to be accountable to their people, and people need to pay more attention to the workings of our political structure. It’s a two way street. and i think because of this sudden transparency people might be more motivated to action here in the US as well.

Feministing has a whole slew of great articles today

this is, literally, the funniest shit i have seen in a while (saw it on feministe).

also from Feministe, this article from an abortion provider. absolute must read. so powerful.

From the blog of the abortion provider, i was linked to this article about how batterers sabotage contraception.  shocking that they would do something like that to maintain power and control.. oh, wait.
