7: Do you read? If so, what are your three favorite books and why?

Yikes. Picking favorite books is like picking favorite songs, but much harder.  Books have a very special place in my heart. I’ve always had a “collection”, when I was little it was goosebumps and such.  Now it’s queer theories to The Dark Tower (series). When I first moved to Hawaii I planned out how to get my books here, I brought a ton with me and then had my mom ship me boxes of the “essentials”.. a lot are still in California. I read a lot. Lately I’ve been reading more online articles than books.  I’m in the middle of Reflections at Walden, Backlash, and Gender Trouble(I love Judith Butler).

One book that sticks out to me is the Secret.  It literally changed the way I look at things, in a way that made me an active participant instead of a bystander.  For the first time I felt powerful and in control of my thoughts.  This was one of the first steps to me getting out of the fog of depression and taking control of my life, and for that reason it sticks out as a favorite. I could read it a million times and never get sick of it.

2. The Seth Material also gave me spiritual/mental tools i needed to become a more full and healed individual.  Reading that book was like reading my own thoughts and concepts and vague notions mapped out in more detail and in an easily-understandable fashion.  Not all of it, but much of that book rings true for me.  When I read this book I had been heavily invested in finding out what I thought about Life and why we are here and what it all means.  It helped me settle those questions and move on.  I think developing my spiritual self and figuring out how i view life has had a lot to do with my success so far.

Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion. ~ Democritus

3. Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valenti.  This book rocked my world.  At a time when I was figuring out there was a lot of patriarchal bullshit (a lot I had participated in) happening in the world this book made it clear exactly how to spot it.  It de-mystified the “f” word (not that I was ever one to be afraid to use it) and made me realize these issues weren’t going to go away unless people did something about it.  It brought Awareness, Anger, and instigated me to Action.  I recommend this book to any young woman.  I still want a shirt that says “I don’t fuck republicans”. And a new copy of this book because I lent mine to someone and never got it back 🙂 No worries – hopefully it’s being passed along.
