I am not afraid

11: What is your favorite quote? How does it relate to your life?

“I am not afraid.  I was born to do this” – St. Joan of Arc

I’ve always known I was born to do big things (and by big things I mean not be a drone and produce, create things, change, live life to the absolute fullest). In college, when i began the journey of enlightenment and self discovery/realization I was lucky enough to have a mentor/role model.  This was the first feminist activist queer progressive role model I ever had, and still is one of the most amazing women I’ve met.  When she moved and was cleaning out her office she gave me a sticker with that quote.  I don’t even know if she knew how well it fit my journey (physically and spiritually).  That quote has gotten me through some very rough times, times when I doubted myself or my capabilities, when I didn’t know if I would succeed or if what I was working on was worth it.  It was scary doing things like staging a protest, having to face people who blatantly oppose you, it’s scary and intimidating to do things against the norm… especially at first.  Especially as a woman (albeit my race and socioeconomic status worked to my advantage)… women are not taught to be bold or aggressive or believe in themselves or even, really, to think beyond how they look/how to get a mate/to have a family.  So while fighting the patriarchal bullshit, i felt empowered by this quote.  On a spiritual level it speaks to me as well, though.. this is the life path i am supposed to be on, so I have no need to fear.
