and not the Asher Roth kind.. though I did that kind too…

22: What subject did / do you exceed in / at school?

I did best in the classes I felt I would be able to apply to life, I was a women’s studies major and it was inter-disciplinary so I took classes like Race & Ethnicity, Queer Theories, Gender & Inequality, Sex & The Spirit.. and I did well, because I was very interested in the material and I saw it everyday in life.  It gave names to what i saw and felt happening around me as far as oppression and the systemic nature of it all (it’s also what helped me land the job i currently have).  The class that I really excelled at though was Feminist Theories.  Now, to be fair, I did take this class twice.  And I did okay the first time around, I was kind of “checked out”.. it was not a good semester for me, but by the second time I took it i had grown so much as a person and taken other classes that really challenged the way I saw the world.. I had just come to a completely new place.  Having been through it once, the second time around I really had a grasp on the material.  It’s very intense and deep and complicated, layered, and nuanced material, and i feel very lucky that I was able to take it again, that was a good choice because it was so foundational for me. And the second time I took the class, everyone else in the class was on their game, everyone was invested on the regular and we were all constantly challenging and pushing each other.. i’ve never felt so pushed to go further and take it to the next level or think about things from a different angle by my classmates, while still feeling like i have a great grasp on the material and integrating what I know with what i’m being exposed to.. it was beautiful. I loved that class, and those people.
