so what’s a Slut Walk?

Redeeming the Slut: a response to Gail Dines at Hugo Schwyzer.

SlutWalk is a public “crying out” in protest against sexual violence. SlutWalkers reject the madonna/whore dichotomy that Dines and Murphy rightly decry. SlutWalk stands for the principle that no matter how short the skirt, no matter how high the heel, no matter how promiscuous the past, every woman is entitled to freedom from verbal or physical sexual assault. SlutWalk began in response to a Toronto constable’s suggestion that women “should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”
